Razzak Jubayer: Silk bridge

Razzak Jubayer is a universal artist, an academic painter and a graphic artist, who was born in Iraq but has been living and working in Piran, Slovenia, for over 30 years. A sophist and a translator of poetry into colours, he produces works of art that exemplify a unique fusion of Eastern and Western influences, a space where his Middle Eastern heritage intertwines with European artistic traditions. Jubayer’s mastery in painting, graphic art and experimental photography allows him to explore complex themes, including nature of identity, tension between exile and belonging, and the pursuit of freedom.

His work, heavily influenced by surrealism, creates a meditative space where the viewer is invited to reflect on the nuances of the human spirit. His paintings often feature intricate, dreamlike landscapes filled with symbolic figures and motifs that explore emotional depth and philosophical ideas. His use of color is both bold and subtle, guiding the viewer through various emotional states. The contrast between vibrant hues and shadowy tones creates a tension that mirrors the duality in his work — between East and West, past and present, confinement and liberation.

Jubayer’s creative process is deeply rooted in self-reflection.
He often speaks of how art serves as a meditative language for him, a means to express what cannot be conveyed through words. His paintings are not merely aesthetic; they are visual meditations, reflecting his inner world and personal evolution. His "Silk Bridge" series, for instance, speaks of cultural dialogues and the seamless connections between different worlds. The symbolic motifs he employs, often drawn from both Arabic and European sources, reflect his quest for unity in diversity.

Jubayer’s installations, known for their evocative and immersive quality also highlight his ability to transcend cultural barriers. His art is a powerful conduit for dialogue, seeking to bridge gaps between different philosophies, cultures, and artistic traditions. Through his installations, graphic works and paintings, Jubayer invites the viewer to enter into a space where time, identity and boundaries are fluid, ultimately reflecting on the shared experiences of humanity.
